Richard Ormrod & Mary Hofman Piano & Violin 13th April 2023; Grimsby Town Hall. Grimsby Concert Society held the final concert of its 2023 24 season series, hosting Richard Ormrod - piano and Mary Hofman violin. Their stunning performance included Four Romances by Dvorák, Enescu’s Impresssions d’enfance, Three pieces for Violin & Piano by the Ukranian composer Svyatoslav Lunyov, and Jonhannes Brahms Violin Sonata no.3 in D minor. With the first beautiful lyrical violin opening, against a flowing piano part, it was clear this was going to be another wonderful concert in fact it was stunning! This was contrasted with a strident second romance, with gypsy influences. The final romance was a plaintiff larghetto, with a delightful piano background. The George Enescu suite opened with a spectacular violin solo fiendishly difficult and played from the heart by Mary. The suite continued with strongly impressionistic piano sections; as a whole the suite was impressionistic and evocative – perfect for two clearly passionate musicians. The Lunyov was interesting and refreshing. Of particular note was the second piece, Because, mysterious and abstract requiring advanced violin techniques. But perhaps the outstanding piece was Adieu, suggestive of a Brahms romance the ending was very delicate, featuring harmonics on the violin, and great control of the piano. Brahms provided a return to the familiar. Mirroring the Dvorák, the opening Allegro also contained gypsy fire in the violin, reinforced by the rich piano part. The Adagio that followed allowed full vent to the wonderful tone of Mary’s violin, whilst the final Presto agitato was both playful and passionate a fitting end to a wonderful concert. IM
